Travelers planning to tour Europe on a Eurail Pass next year will be able for the first time to use it to visit Turkey.

As of Jan. 1, T.C.D.D., the Turkish state railway, will become a member of Eurail Global, which manages and markets the passes. The membership means that people with Eurail Global Passes (which allow travelers to hop aboard trains in 24 countries) and Select Passes (which cover up to five adjoining countries) can go to Turkey (Hagia Sofia, above) via Bulgaria.

« T.C.D.D. would very much like to make their increased rail network known overseas and the Eurail Group offers the best platform for that in these markets such as North America, » Ana Dias e Seixas, marketing director for Eurail, wrote in an e-mail.

This isn’t the only change. Westbahn, a new high-speed rail service between Salzburg and Vienna, will also join the group, becoming its first private railway. And S.N.C.F., France’s national railway, will withdraw from the Select Pass program, limiting travel through France to Global or Regional Pass holders only.
