From Tunisia to Egypt, the “Arab Spring” uprisings ousted autocrats and catapulted several Islamist movements to positions of power. Many looked to Turkey, whose moderately Islamist AK party, was seen as a model. Host Carol Castiel talks with Soner Cagaptay, Director of the Turkish Research Program at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and Michael Werz, Senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, about the viability of the “Turkish model” in light of popular protests against Prime Minister Erdogan, the Egyptian military’s crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, and how Ankara is grappling with the domestic and external turmoil that threaten its rise as a regional power broker.
